Find large files on Windows 11 and review them before deleting

Start with a list of files you can explain. Size tells you where to investigate; it does not tell you what you can safely remove.

Start with File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer and choose the folder you want to inspect, such as Downloads.
  2. Use List view and sort by the Size column to review individual files. Folder totals can require a separate calculation.
  3. Use the File Explorer search box with a size filter such as size:>1GB. Confirm the search scope before interpreting the results.
  4. Inspect the full path, file type, modification date and the application that owns each large item.

File Explorer and Windows 11 Storage settings may be sufficient for a small cleanup. Apple's Windows installation and file-access guidance explains adding search criteria.

When a storage map helps

A map makes relative sizes easier to scan when the space is spread across many folders. SpaceLens presents disk usage as a sunburst and treemap, with a reviewable cleanup workflow. Use the map to investigate a folder, then confirm the actual files before acting.

File access depends on the permissions you grant and Windows 11 protections. A partial scan is not proof that the missing space does not exist. Check which volume and folders were included.

Worked example: a cleanup decision log

The following rows are synthetic examples, not a customer's files or measured storage savings.

CandidateCheckDecision
An old installerThe app is installed and a trusted replacement remains availableKeep if needed for reinstalling; otherwise review for removal
A 12 GB project archiveThe extracted project exists, opens and is backed upRetain until the restore check passes
A photo-library packageWhich library your photo app currently usesManage through the owning app; do not delete internal files
A dependency or build folderA reproducible build, manifests, lockfiles and network/package availabilityOnly remove generated files you can recreate; preserve local changes
An unfamiliar system folderOwnership and documented purposeLeave it alone until identified

Download the example decision log and replace its rows with your own observations.

External drives and recovery

Before a large scan, confirm whether the installed release can read your particular external volume and filesystem, and whether it reports permission failures. Choose the volume explicitly; do not assume a Windows 11 PC-wide scan includes every mounted drive.

  1. Back up the files you intend to keep.
  2. Use a disposable file to check the available cleanup and undo controls.
  3. Confirm where the file moved and whether it can be reopened after recovery.
  4. Do not empty the Recycle Bin until you have checked the remaining files and backup. Recovery after permanent deletion is not promised.
