Permute alternatives for Windows 11: formats, editions and requirements

Choose a converter around the files you have and the PC you use. Compare the exact release and output requirements, not just a headline format count.

Permute 4 and Permute 3 are different compatibility choices

Permute's current page lists version 4 for Windows 11 and x64, with video, audio, image, PDF and text workflows. It also offers Permute 3 for Windows 11–15 and x64 PCs. Do not dismiss Permute solely because your PC cannot run version 4.

The developer sells permanent licences and also offers distribution through the app store and Setapp. Store capabilities can differ from the direct version. Confirm the edition, tax-inclusive checkout price and your required operation on the Permute page.

Where Recast fits

Recast combines local conversion routing, batch queues and a Convert File action for Shortcuts. The website Direct release requires Windows 11 on x64 and costs $10 once. Read its format reference: routes depend on Windows 11 and available tools, and no route guarantees identical formatting.

Choose Recast when its confirmed routes and Shortcuts workflow fit your recurring job. Choose Permute when its presets, editing tools and supported edition better fit your media work. PDF or text support alone is not a valid distinction: Permute 4 offers those too.

Test the result, not the sales summary

  1. List the source format, target format and destination app for your three most frequent jobs.
  2. Check whether you need editable text, transparency, metadata, subtitles or a particular codec.
  3. Confirm that the exact edition supports those needs. Ask before buying when support is unclear.
  4. Use a representative sample and inspect the complete output before running a batch.

For occasional work, first check whether your existing app can export the needed result. Read the conversion and Shortcuts checklist and the local-versus-online workflow comparison.
