File browsing, storage cleanup and backup on Windows
Understand the difference between organising files, finding duplicates and making a verified backup on Windows.
Organisation is not a backup
Folders, tags and saved searches can make files easier to find, but they do not create a separate recoverable copy. Before reorganising an important library, keep an independent backup and check that a sample of its files opens. Moving files between folders on one disk does not protect against that disk failing.
Review duplicates before removing them
A shared filename or similar picture is not proof of identical content. Review the locations, sizes and contents, and choose which copy you want to keep. A photo that looks redundant may be an edited export, an original or part of another project. Recoverable deletion is useful, but the Recycle Bin still occupies disk space.
Treat cloud-only files separately
A cloud placeholder can display a name and logical size without containing all the file bytes locally. A backup needs the real contents. Check cloud provider status and available disk space before downloading a large folder, and verify the destination before releasing a local copy.
