Choose how you think on the page
Page-based notes suit handwriting and annotated documents. Spatial maps suit connected ideas and outlines. A document workspace suits structured text, tables and presentations. Flashcards solve a different problem: practising recall from a source. Start with the view you will use every day.
Distinguish an export from a full backup
A PDF is a useful reading copy but may flatten editable objects. Markdown is portable text but cannot preserve every layout, ink stroke or formula. A native backup can preserve more state, yet may depend on the app and platform that created it. Keep both a recoverable backup and a readable export where appropriate.
Test a representative document
Try a copy containing the features you actually use: images, handwriting, links, tables, non-English text or audio references. Export it and inspect every page. Check whether the app embeds the original media or saves a link to its current location; moving a referenced file may break access.
Keep Mac and Windows compatibility explicit
Do not assume two platform editions share every file format or feature. Retain the original Mac document while trying a Windows import. IndepApps release pages will describe supported formats and known limits for the tested Windows build before downloads open.
